Short Story Wednesday: The Truth About Owls

“The Truth About Owls” by Amal El-Mohtar is a literary coming-of-age story published in Kaleidoscope: Diverse YA Science Fiction and Fantasy Stories (2014). (Audio / Text)

I think there are a few core fears that every human feels to some degree—the fear of death, the fear of losing your mind, and the fear of the harm we’re capable of, to name a few. As adults, most of us have found a way to wrestle this darkness into submission and don’t spend much time thinking about it. In Anisa’s story, Amal reminded me of what it was like before winning my freedom with her nuanced examination of the battle. She moved me to tears and left me a little stronger for it.

Each Wednesday, I review my favourite published story I’ve read during the past week. If you’d like to join me by reviewing a short story on your blog each Wednesday, email me the link to your post, and I’ll share it below. I learned of Short Story Wednesday from Patricia Abbot’s blog.
